A message from our Rev. Carole Marsden

Dear members and friends of Shrewsbury URC

We are living in uncertain, and often confusing and fearful times, as the government request us all to play our part in slowing the spread of Covid 19. Whilst there are many practical measures we must take to stay safe and well we remain the Church, albeit in a different form.

The Elders have agreed a way forward and ask that in these times, though our practical day to day life may be altered, our care of one another and our faith in a loving God remain.

During the coming weeks please do keep in touch with one another, with your Pastoral Link, the Elders and with me. If you are feeling alone or simply want to chat, perhaps you need something and are at a loss of how to find a solution. Please do pick up the phone! In addition to phone calls and online contact we hope there will be opportunities to post prayer resources through as many doors as possible as people take exercise or walk dogs around the town.

It has been suggested that we could invite all our congregation to pause at a certain time of day and share in a moment of quiet, a prayer or thought for one another. A number of different times have been suggested and no time will suit everyone so I would like to suggest we go for 9am and that it is entirely acceptable to pray in bed! or at any other time of day that works for you, and offer the following prayer, from the Synod Moderator Steve Faber, should it be useful to you.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. “

Psalm 46:1 – A time of quiet is kept as you remember those known to you who are worried, ill or lonely and offer your own concerns and hopes to God.

Living, loving God, we praise you and through times of peril we lean into you, for in Jesus Christ you have trodden paths as difficult as ours, revealing there a love that nothing defeats, a love that bears us through. Even as we strive to behave responsibly, and to care reliably, so we feel after you that in these uncertain times we might trust you are with us, our refuge and strength, and our faith, hope and love might be renewed, through Jesus Christ.

Amen.

A number of online resources will be available from the United Reformed Church, who are pooling their talents and time to provide reflections and prayers. Please link through to our Webpage, facebook page or twitter if you are so inclined for ongoing contacts.

Til we are able to meet in person, many thanks for your ongoing care of one another and your faithful prayer at this time. God Bless! Carole xx
